![]() A pathway has been paved by humanity for almost every situation you will be in during your lifetime, including your death. People have been stabbed, shot, beaten, brutally tortured and downright lied to. Suicidal humans were a rarity in the past, and that was when almost all of them were at war and were highly unknowdlegable about medicine, and ignorant of rationalism. This is because chronic tinnitus caused by damage instead of stress can't happen in the WHM because there is no pathway or reason as to how it would, while stress-induced chronic tinnitus is dependant on cortisol which the WHM lowers on the long term (days to weeks). The fact is that in the vast majority of cases tinnitus (even newly induced tinnitus) disappears on the long-term with repeated WHM practice. The tinnitus then causes more stress and more cortisol, which causes more tinnitus. My guess is that there are many confounders, like people that already have stress-induced tinnitus that they notice once trying the WHM, upon which they stop the WHM (so no average cortisol decrease). On top of that, there are many cases where people that already had tinnitus experience a permanent decrease in their symptoms as a result of the WHM. Hypoxia-induced chronic tinnitus can only occur when ischemia actually induces cell death, and the WHM doesn't cause hypoxia long enough to do that (since you would find brain damage before that as well). Secondly, certain Hypoxia-Inducible Factors (HIF) are also associated with both acute and chronic tinnitus, but is rather a marker instead of the cause. Since the WHM induces a high cortisol peak, which can last for a few hours, this can definitely be an explanation. This can make existing tinnitus more pronounced but could also temporarily cause tinnitus by itself. To make a long story short the brain-adrenal axis (cortisol) influences the stria vascularis in the inner ear, so more cortisol equals more tinnitus. ![]() The science on all of this is shaky at best, but there are multiple pathways trough which the WHM could cause acute tinnitus. This is an explanation for the phenomena which I got from another user earlier: If you find that, after several weeks, the noise persists or intensifies, some underlying physiological condition may be at play, and we recommend you consult a medical professional. In the vast majority of cases, the ringing disappears with repeated breathing practice. The scientific community continues to grapple with the particulars of tinnitus, but has established that the phenomenon itself is harmless. The breathing exercises also increase neural activity in the auditory brainstem, where the brain processes sounds, possibly causing auditory nerve cells to become over-excited. Medical research shows a direct link between pulsatile tinnitus and anaemia, which the WHM may ameliorate through the elevated oxygen intake. The connection between tinnitus and the Wim Hof Method has various possible causes. Conversely, those dealing with chronic tinnitus often find relief from its concomitant anxiety in the calming effect of the breathing techniques. For some people, practicing the WHM either induces or exacerbates the ringing, while for others it changes the pitch. ![]() Their answer: This effect known as ‘tinnitus’ has a wide range of causes and manifestations. The team don't deny it, but also don't confirm it. I want to do the breathing, but not if there's a big risk involved. I'm not sure exactly how to go from here. Feeling a bit scared I reached out to the WHM team. So, I heard rumours about a possible risk of getting permanent tinnitus from doing the Wim Hof breathing.
